I was such a huge fan of the original Jumanji with the legendary Robin Williams that I had actually been purposely putting off seeing this so as to not tarnish the image I have of the original. But I felt it was time to bite the bullet.
The movie begins with a hyper brief introduction to the 4 characters who will be the main characters as they all manage to end up in detention for a variety of reasons, and it’s during detentions that they find the Jumanji game, and after they pick their characters, get sucked into the game.
They slowly (far worse than what most games tutorial are) get used to the game, it’s mechanics, their “limited lives”, their strengths and weaknesses, but then it’s on to the next level and challenge. First to find the missing piece, which turns out to be a kid who got sucked into the game 20 years earlier.
So I held off a long time because I was kinda worried that it was going to ruin it, That it was going to just trash what had already been done. But thankfully, it doesn’t. It thankfully takes it down a different path to what the original did and that is a good thing.
It does have (at least plot wise) an obvious repetitive theme that you can see coming. Challenge, death, challenge workaround, friendship, comprehension, and repeat. This pretty much continues throughout the entire movie.
They had a great cast (both in and out of Jumanji) but it was more the storyline and the writing that let them down but it is still a movie worth seeing. At least once.
