Big Fish – 2003

IMDB: Big Fish – 2003

This is a story. A story of a series of stories. A series of stories that tell a story about a story. A story that tells a story abo…. Lets leave that there. I think you get the idea.

As a father tells his son stories, wild, imaginative stories, his son believes him, until he grows up and realises that these stories could not be real, and eventually pushes his father out of his life. As the years pass with no talking eventually his father falls ill with cancer, he finally goes home to find out what is real.

As he sorts out fact from fiction, he starts to learn that some of the stories are actually true. which contradicts his own thinking, “how could some of these be real?” It’s just too far fetched.

I have seen this movie before and didn’t enjoy it then. There was just too many plots too many stories that struggle to coalesce in the final plot piece of his fathers final story, the final plot piece of the immortal fish. This time wasn’t much different, though I feel it did come together a little neater this time, but I wonder how much having seen it before made that happen.

I don’t really have too much of an opinion on this movie. It rates high, but I just don’t see it. It’s not a bad movie, but also in my opinion not a great one either. It’s just a collection of short stories, and for that you should probably just instead read a book of short stories.
