*NSFW* Urotsukidoji – 1989

IMDB: Urotsukidoji – 1989 – also titled “Legend of the Overfiend”

IMDB Rating: 6.4/10

Rotten Tomatoes: na%

Warning: *NSFW* This movie is very violent. It contains borderline horror pornographic scenes (depending on your perspective) most of which are far from consensual, it is brutal, and (again depending on your perspective) highly disturbing. It is not suitable for most people. Even mature ones. Consider yourself forewarned.

I first saw this movie in the darkness of 3am when I was all of maybe 14-15, not too long after I watched another movie (Wicked City) similar in some styles to Urotsukidoji, but nowhere near the level of this own.

When the relatively peaceful coexistence of the human world, the beast world and the demon world is threatened by the return of the Overfiend born after 300 years (this time in human form). As he begins shredding the boundaries between the worlds it becomes increasingly obvious that there is nothing that can stop him as he starts remaking the world as he sees fit.

As disturbingly perverse as this movie is, I actually really like it. The animation is done very well (I vaguely recall reading somewhere that it was all done by hand – HOLY SHIT thats talented), and the storytelling is well told with well thought out character development as the Overfiend learns who (and more importantly) what he is.

As you may have guessed (from the warning at the top of this post) this movie is absolutely not for everyone, hell, it’s not even for most people. But if you fall into the group of people who would get some enjoyment out of this movie, then well, you’ve probably already seen it.
