Maleficent – 2014

IMDB: Maleficent -2014

IMDB Rating: 7.0/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 51%

Betrayed by her human companion that she has befriended over a long period, Maleficent the fairy had her wings removed by the young man in order to advance himself to the throne of the human world. Eventually when the new king and his queen birth a baby girl, everyone gathers to celebrate the births with gifts, and in a moment of prime vengeance Maleficent also arrives to provide a gift of her own.

A curse on the baby Aurora, that with her good looks, her rosy outlook on everything and the fact that everyone who meets her will love her, that upon her 16th birthday she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into a death like sleep.

This is (I think) the first major appearance after her elective double mastectomy, and it could be just her makeup, but she does look gaunt throughout the movie. That said though, the ever professional actress does carry her own as they put the spin on the classical Sleeping Beauty fairy tale.

It’s a great little mix of heritage (the story of sleeping beauty) and the modernisation of it (the background and magic and the realm as a whole) that is wonderfully pulled together to tell a tale of wonder, joy and eventually redemption. It is definitely worth the hour an 40 minutes to sit and watch.
