A couple of kids spot an otherwise unknown comet by chance. Fast forward a year and a reporter stumbles upon a secret in the White House and the sudden shock retirement of an ageing Secretary due to an apparent affair with an Ellie.
Well, it was an Ellie, but not that one. Try E.L.E. the Extinction Level Event. Remember that comet this kids discovered, yeah well it’s booked in a date with planet Earth, and yes, there will be penetration on the first date.
All the measures that humanity uses (and when I say humanity I mean the the US, because guess who gets to play hero in a movie made by Americans) fails to destroy the comet, and in fact that screw up badly enough that they split it into 2. Well good on the guys and gal in space who kamikaze that larger one to “save the world”.
Despite all my commentary above, my enjoyment of and interest in space has led me to watch this several times in the 20 years (damn I feel old) since it’s release, and will indubitably lead me to watch it several more times in the next 20 years.
